Photo Packages | What is Right For You? | Oakville Family Photographer
It’s so hard to choose! After researching the right photographer with the style that you like the best, who serves you in the way you want (be it in-home, studio or outdoor options) now you have to decide on the right package. It’s a difficult decision sometimes - and don’t I know it, I’ve recently been on the other side choosing a maternity and newborn photographer for my family.
I’ve gone back and forth with what suits my clients needs best. Because that’s who I do this for; you!
So when booking my own photo sessions and choosing the right photographer I had to weigh the options - all inclusive (all the best images from the session or choosing a limited amount of images and leaving some behind.
So what are the main things you must consider?
Define Your Needs
What’s the occasion?
Before you even look at packages, think about your vision:
Are you celebrating a milestone (like a birthday or anniversary)?
Is this your annual holiday photo session?
Do you want lifestyle shots at home or posed portraits at a park?
Are you hoping to include extended family or just your immediate crew?
Having a clear idea of what you want helps you choose the package (and photographer) best suited for the moment.
Your Budget
Photographer packages vary widely in cost depending on location, experience, and deliverables. Be honest about what you can afford, but remember: you often get what you pay for.
💡 Tip: Instead of going for the cheapest option, look for value. A mid-tier package with a skilled photographer might be a better investment than a budget option with limited experience.
Consider Style - Are you drawn to their work?
Even the most comprehensive package won’t matter if the photographer’s style doesn’t match your vision. Spend time reviewing their portfolio:
Family photographers often specialize in different styles:
Candid/lifestyle: Focused on natural interactions, play, and storytelling
Classic/posed: More traditional, with guided positioning and group shots
Documentary: Real-life moments captured with minimal direction (great for in-home sessions)
Browse their portfolio and social media. If the photos make you feel something, that’s a good sign they’ll capture your family in a way that feels authentic.
Your package should suit your personality just as much as it fits your budget.

Different Type of Sessions
Most family photographers offer two main types of packages. I offer “petite” sessions for holiday’s and special creative style or locations, but I’m always booking full sessions anytime of the year.
Mini Sessions
Usually 15–20 minutes
Lower cost, often held on set dates at specific locations
Ideal for quick holiday photos or families with very young kids
Fewer final images (often 5–10 edited photos)
Full Sessions
40–90 minutes or more
More flexibility in location and styling
Great for capturing a variety of groupings, candid moments, and details
Includes more final images and sometimes print credits or albums
💡 Tip: If you're looking for a relaxed session with time to play and connect, a full session is usually worth the investment.
The best package is the one that balances quality, experience, and flexibility—so you can focus on what matters most: making memories.
Choosing the right family photography package is about more than just the price tag. It’s about finding someone who gets your family, can work with your unique dynamic, and delivers images you’ll treasure for years.
